GEC Alsthom Paxman Diesels has supplied 12 high speed Paxman 12VP185 diesels for installation in these new 42-knot patrol boats which are also for the Taiwan Seventh Peace Prevention Police Corps.
Paxman has a deserved reputation for lightweight, high-speed diesels in patrol boat all over the world, including Middle East and Far East naval vessels, customs and marine police boats, US Navy Cyclone Class and Coast Guard Island Class patrol boats, African fisheries protection vessels, and patrol boats for Greek Customs and Britain's Customs and Excise.
However, this is the first major patrol boat application for the Paxman 12VP185 high speed diesel, which has been derated from its output of 2,610kW at l,500rpm to 2,443kW at l,950rpm, the maximum rating for patrol craft.
In each boat, a pair of these high speed diesels will drive 1,350mm Servogear VD-820D controllable pitch propellers through 2.2682:1 Reintjes WLS-930U lightweight gearboxes. The propellers each have four highly skewed blades. GEC Alsthom's Regulateurs Europa is supplying Viking 22 propulsion control panels.
The gearboxes, in U-drive configuration, have a resilient mounting and a hollow-bored output shaft with OD-box connection. A K-31 non-controllable power take-off is the primary drive for the Servogear CP propeller pump.
Carrying crews of 12, these boats will patrol the coastline of Taiwan to deter smuggling, drug trafficking, piracy and illegal immigration as well as performing rescue and fisheries protection roles.
The boats have a cruising range of about 600 nautical miles at 25 knots which is some 17 knots below the maximum speed of 42 knots achieved during trials. Each boat carries 17m3 of fuel which supplies the twin main engines and a pair of 48kW diesel generators.
Construction of the vessels is similar to that of the smaller craft, featuring a longitudinal framing structure. DuPont's C77K/200, a combination of Keviar and L-Glass, is used for all main structures while the mast on the wheelhouse is aluminum.
The boats are designed and built to the requirements of Det Norske Veritas classification with a design maximum vertical acceleration at the longitudinal centre of gravity of 4g.
Major items of navigational equipment include a pair of 48nm high speed X-band radars, a video plotter, GPS, direction finder, echo sounder, gyrocompass and autopilot.
Communications are covered by two 400W SSB radio telephones, a single two-way Duplex VHF and a public address / loud hailing system.
Each craft is also fitted with a 6.5 metre RIB launched and retrieved from an aft mounted davit and a pair of half-inch machine guns, one forward and one aft.
