Solar Powered River Electric Boat

Lung-Teh Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (Taiwan) just finished the design and constructions of two solar powered river electric tourist ferries and delivered to the local government in September 2005. These new tourist ferries are also the first solar powered ferry used in Taiwan. There are many special designs such as the low wash hull form, electric propulsion system, retractable canvas system, and multiple battery charging system.

The hull design is specially considered. Since the river bank is quite natural and easy to be damaged, the local government requests the hull generated wave to be as small as possible. Besides, the cruising time of electric boats are very limited to the hull resistances. However, the wide tourist deck area is also the key point to the tourist ferry. Based on the above consideration, the hull form is designed in the catamaran with low resistance and low wash concept to reach the ownerˇ¦s requirement.

The tourist ferry is operated in the river, and there are many old bridges across the river. The limited air draft is also the key point. The tourist ferry uses the retractable canvas system to reduce the air draft of the boat while passing the bridges.

The propulsion system of the tourist ferry is twin fix-pitch-propellers driven by two 10KW electric motors via reduction gears. The electric motor is made by E-cycle Co., in USA. With total 16 sets of 12V200AH battery bank, the fully charged battery could provide the necessary power to operate the boat more than 16 hours at 3 knots cruising speed.

There is also one multiple power charging system on board. The power source could be solar cell, LPG genset and shore power. During the night without operation, the battery is charged by the shore power system. It takes about 8 hours to charge the battery banks from empty to full. Under the daylight, the twelve 170W solar cells generate the maximum 2040W power to the battery charging system. During the bad weather and low battery condition, the emergent generator set could be started to provide the necessary power to charging the battery. The generator use LPG as the fuel to reduce any possible pollution.
